We had to removes ourselves from any possible governmental agencies that may have been reinstituted. Only we could understand the potential of our work. We couldn't allow any hindrance from politicians or military groups bent on obtaining power or any morally based organization who banded together to sullenly face the wrath of their gods. It was imperative to treat the plague and its cause as an enemy. We had to step outside of any conventional society and create a new one, one that could deal with the disease on its own level. For the human race to survive drastic measures were needed and we couldn't be confined by the rules that controlled society for centuries. We had to adapt to new conditions, new rules. It was
time to look away from the past and towards the future...a time for mankind
as a whole to act in its own best interests. Similar to insects, the
tactic had to be one of what's best for the entire species regardless of
the individuals. We turned to diseases that we understood---to look for pathways and systematic transfer. Our fist experimentations utilized Mycobacterium leprae, the leprosy bacterium, as we hoped the tissue necrosis from that disease might provide answer to the decayed flesh of the undead. We tested the town of Brunston and found little correlation between the diseases and have to consider the testing insufficient. But even negative answer gave us clues. No idea was dismissed without research. As the old saying goes, desperate times call for desperate measures. And we were desperate. So the people of Brunston had to be tested. They gave their lives in order that the human race would survive. |
