We had to find a way to stop the zombies. And the best way was to attack them on the one consistent factor they all had.
They had to feed.
We injected subjects with cancerous cells and RNA retroviruses to see what happened when the living flesh was consumed by the zombies. We hoped that somehow we could interrupt the normal cell activity of the dead cells.
However, neither the cancer nor HIV could survive in the zombies cells for they essentially have no process of life occurring. That drove us to seek the mechanisms of movement. I mean, if the cells had no cellular activity, no ATP energy cycles, no respiration, no mitochondrial action...how could the zombies even move? We had to move from a cellular level to a more macrosystem level.
Our tests had to concentrate on the physical aspects. Testing was done on various body parts. Could we develop a symbiotic relationship between the zombie and living cells?
Using humans as testing subjects gives us a unique perspective in that we can get immediate and direct input from them. As their bodies are slowly consumed by the diseases, we can observe first hand what the process is.
