PUFFIN GRAPHIC CLASSIC SERIES FROM PENGUIN BOOKS

Art by Becky Cloonan.

This adaptation is one of a  series of graphic novels from Puffin Classics, a division of Penguin Books.  Puffin is geared towards younger audiences and these graphic novels are about 170 pages long and "manga" format in that they're slightly smaller than normal trades.

The line was edited by Byron Preiss and launched a number of titles that were to cover the spectrum of classic literature.  Offered in display "dumps" at bookstores in the initial shipments, the line was abandoned when Byron Preiss tragically died in a car accident.

GARY REED'S THOUGHTS AND NOTES ON WRITING DRACULA:
Dracula was a fairly easy adaptation for me in the sense that I was very familiar with the novel after I had written the Renfield series.  Although I had concentrated primarily on the Renfield character, in the novel of Dracula itself, he didn't play that predominate of a role.  However, I did have to read and re-read the novel a few times for this adaptation.  It is rather surprising how the novel is structured as the entire contents are all from notes, journals, and correspondence and there is no single narrator chronicling the story.  It is also surprising of just how much of the novel is dealing with Jonathon Harker's visit to Castle Dracula and then towards the end of the book, when the men protecting Mina Harker chase down Dracula and how long those scenes actually are.
