CHAPTER SIX

If someone were to look at the dojo at the end of the path from the garden, they would see a teenage boy standing still and clutching a wooden sword. The boy stared straight ahead with his feet firmly planted, and didn’t seem to notice the wind that picked up leaves and swirled them in front of his face.

However, if they had the power that David had, then they would see what David saw. He did not see a boy’s hands holding a sword of wood, but rather an ebony blazoned katana that he held with gloves made of laced steel. He was not wearing ordinary clothes, but instead glistening black armor with four rings decorating the breastplate.

Instead of the dusty twilight sky with raindrops beginning to appear, David saw a hazy mist covering the land. In this world he had entered, there was no night, no day, but always a cloudy gray.

This world, this shadow realm that allowed him to hold the powerful katana of Hiro, Lord of The Black Rings, was not complete. The only way to restore it fully was to bring the fourth ring back to the sword that he clutched in his hand. But even with just the three rings, he would have enough power to defeat anyone who would dare to pick up the Heavensblade.

David took a deep breath. He felt good. He knew in his mind that this was his place, this was his right destiny. He had the bloodline running through him and he could hear the faded voices of those who wanted to join him. David wanted them to join, too. He wanted the spirits of all the samurai who had died throughout history serving the Clan of the Black Rings. He clutched the sword closer to his chest. He would restore them.

David waited. He waited to see who would come to him for the sword of Toho. He knew that whoever it was, they would have to be struck down, and Toho’s katana pried from their dead fingers. No one could stop David from getting the Heavensblade sword, and after that, the fourth ring. Then, the shadow world would become real again. It would have the sun, the moon, the day and the night. And it would have the rebirth of The Clan of the Black Rings.

David knew all of this because he heard the whispers in his ear, the whispers of the great Hiro who spoke to him across the ages.
