It
is a world of fantasy.
Of
magic
Of
imagination
It is the
Realm.
Four teenagers are
plunged into a world they thought only existed in novels and film. They are
whisked away to a magical land where Dragons roam the skies, orcs and hobgoblins
terrorize the travelers, and where unicorns prance through the forest.
It is a world where man
is just one race, joining other races such as elves, trolls, dwarves,
changelings, and the dreaded night creatures who steal the night.
Not a typical "dungeons
and dragons" world, for this world follows the adventures of these teens into
the unknown as we watch the world unfold with their eyes. Our heroes are normal
teenagers thrust into this world, a world that is foreign to them. We learn as
they learn.
What hope do the teens have
in this strange world? How can they hope to survive against wizards, dwarves,
haflings, dragons, and trolls if they had a hard time in high school?
GARY REED'S THOUGHTS AND NOTES ON THE REALM:
The Realm, along with Deadworld, were two of Caliber's earliest series as they
were picked up from Arrow Comics. There were 13 issues of the Realm from
Arrow and Caliber finished off the first volume at issue 20. When it came
time to relaunch the series due to the constant flux of writers and artists, I
decided to write the series myself. I found the earlier incarnations were
a bit too derivative. I revamped things and even had the land hit by a
time flux which changed everything and re-organized the characters, the
land...everything. Looking back, that may not have been the best thing to
do. The fans of the Realm liked the series for what it was...a derivative
of role playing games, Lord of the Rings, Dungeons and Dragons, etc. I
introduced a lot of political intrigue which probably also wasn't the smartest
thing to do with fantasy. But some of it worked out good, so it wasn't a
total disaster. After 13 issues, I turned the writing over to Joe Martin
who relaunched the series as LEGENDLORE and brought it back to the fantasy
essence (although a more sophisticated one). It had great success and was
a big hit with fantasy fans. Live and learn. Between the Realm and
Legendlore, over 40 issues were released.
